This year marks the 472nd anniversary of the birth of Vitsentzos Kornaros. On this occasion, the Municipality of Sitia and Stegi VITSENTZOS KORNAROS are co-organizing a two-day celebration dedicated to the poet of Erotokritos, on March 28 and 29, 2025. With this, the organizers hope to establish an annual celebration to be held on the first weekend (Friday-Saturday) after March 25 .
This year, the events will begin in the morning of Friday, March 28. At 11 am, teachers and students from the Municipal Conservatory of Sitia “Stratis Kalogeridis” will accompany students from the local primary, middle and high schools to a traditional serenade to the poet’s monument, where the choir and students from the Music School “Aretousa” will perform and sing Erotokritos under the direction of their teachers, Julia Cross and George Fournarakis. The event will be greeted by the Mayor of Sitia, Mr. George Zervakis, and the founder of Stegi VITSENTZOS KORNAROS, Mr. George Galanakis. Next, a member of the Managing Committee, Mr. Nassos Zagotis, will speak about the poet and the universal character of Erotokritos. Then, excerpts from the poem will be sung by students from the 1st Middle School of Sitia, accompanied by their music teacher, Maria Hatzilambrou.
On the morning of the following day, Saturday, March 29, the Municipal Philharmonic Orchestra will take over with a rich musical programme In the afternoon of the same day, the events will culminate at the Polykentron of the Municipality of Sitia, where Professor Stefanos Kaklamanis will present the book Our Erotokritos: Testimonies, that was recently published by Stegi VITSENTZOS KORNAROS. The evening’s events will be musically accompanied by Manolis Kanavakis (piano), Manolis Kampanakis (singing), students of the Music Middle and High School of Kavoussi, and members of the “Lykeion ton Ellinidon” of Sitia.
The gathering will conclude with refreshments in the foyer of the Polykentron of Sitia.
