Dr. Metaxia Tsipopoulou, Honorary Directress of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, will talk about the Byzantine cemetery that was discovered above the ruins of the Minoan palace of Petras, on Wednesday 19 March 2025, at 7pm.
From 1991 to 1995, alongside the excavation of the Minoan palace of Petras, a Byzantine cemetery that was established on the ruins of the palace and was used from the late 11th to the 13th centuries AD, was also studied. In this burial site, 99 individuals were interred (men, women, children, infants) in 33 graves of various types, as well as in an ossuary.
During the lecture, the types of graves, the burial customs, the movable finds and the historical context of the period will be presented, as well as the main conclusions of the study of the skeletal material, which help us establish a better understanding of the small community to which the cemetery belonged.
