Stegi Vitsentzos Kornaros invites you to watch the first lecture of the Online Linguistics Lecture Series, titled: “Languages or Dialects? A difficult decision we do not dare make”, on Wednesday, November 9, at 8 pm, by Dr. Marina Tzakosta.
What are geographical language varieties? Are they complete linguistic systems equal to the standard language? Are they languages that constantly change? Are they languages which are used differently by different people? Are they written? If yes, why don’t we dare give them the place they deserve?
During the talk, similarities and differences between various geographical varieties will be discussed, focusing on the language spoken in Crete. The lecturer will also talk about speakers’ attitudes and how these affect language ideology, as well as the design of language policy.

One can watch the lecture live:
– on Facebook: “Stegi Vitsentzos Kornaros”,
– on Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/87624999799.
