A lecture by the sculptor Aspasia Papadoperaki, titled: “Modernity after the Middle Ages”, at the Municipal Garden of Sitia, at 20:30.

Three were the main factors that brought a significant change about the end of the Middle Ages, defining the so-called Modernity, the modern era:
1. The substantial contribution of Byzantine knowledge and art to the Western civilization after the fall of Byzantium.
2. The survival of the Greek language and its initial coexistence with Latin, a condition which favoured the translating of Greek and ancient texts.
3. Greek philosophy, especially that of the pre-Socratics, and its view on the nature of things as a whole, particularly owed to Epicurus, which urged man to enjoy happiness free of fear, prejudice and addiction, in complete balance with nature.
Aspasia Papadoperaki is a sculptor, writer and scenographer, born in 1942 in Heraklion. She studied sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts, and then received a scholarship to continue her studies at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
As a sculptor she favours the use of elements she has developed in her study on human form, as well as elements inspired by the traditional architecture of the Aegean and the archaic period of Greek sculpture.
Her works can be seen in numerous places, in Heraklion, Alexandria, Istanbul, Athens and elsewhere. She has created monuments that honour women who participated in the Resistance during World War II, in various villages in Crete. She has participated in many art exhibitions in Greece and abroad. In 2009 she was awarded by the Academy of Athens for her entire body of work and in 2021 she received the International “Nikos Kazantzakis” Award.
