Lefteris Perrotis, “Sitia and its surrounding area, 1870-1970: Economy and Society”.

Lefteris Perrotis is a historian, a Stegi VITSENTZOS KORNAROS research scholar, and an associate researcher at the Historic Research Lab of Modern and Contemporary Societies, University of Ioannina.
After almost two years of research, Lefteris Perrotis’ work: “Sitia and its surrounding area, 1870-1970: economy and society” has finally taken its written form. This historic study is focusing on the town of Sitia of the Late Ottoman period, which is being researched for the first time in accordance with a specific methodology. The study aims at highlighting the main characteristics which define the particular area of habitation as an urban centre, in the framework of the political, institutional, social, economic and cultural transformations, as well as the variations in population, that took place during the Cretan State period, which were soon to be dramatically changed in the 1912-1922 warfare years, then to be re-defined in the inter-War period (1922-1940), and consequently violently disrupted during World War II, before they ended up indulging in the post-War socio-economic frenzy.
