We invite you to the opening of the weaving exhibition “Dedication to the Fates,” where Vasileia Anipsitaki, Ourania Fthenaki, and Venetia Galanaki will present their works, accompanied by music from Filothei Alexaki (oud, vocals).
Weaving in Crete and beyond responded to a necessity of daily life, and often textiles crafted with exceptional skill and care went unnoticed. Today, women consciously decide to return to the loom, a kind of freedom their predecessors did not enjoy. They choose to spend their time with threads, shuttles, warps, and combs. They choose to face challenges that require immense patience and perseverance.
Just as the Fates of mythology weave the lives of humans, modern weavers weave their own lives with each pass of the shuttle and each beat of the comb. By choosing where to dedicate our time, we shape our lives.
“An offering to the Fates” is a tribute to the women whose works went unnoticed but whose lives are intertwined with our own. To the everyday Fates who, with every weave, have and continue to define us.
