Aspasia Papadoperaki, Stage Design Exhibition: “Erotokritos and Aretousa”, an opera by Nikos Mamagakis.

In 1985 Manos Hadjidakis and the record company Seirios as well as the Mayor of Heraklion Manolis Karellis commissioned Nikos Mamagakis to work on what proved to be perhaps the most aspiring of the Erotokritos plays ever staged; it’s an opera in five acts, with music and libretto by Nikos Mamagakis, directed by Nikos Nikolaidis. The opera was staged in Heraklion, with sets designed by Aspasia Papadoperaki, and was also performed in Sitia, at the fortress of Kazarma, a Venetian monument served as part of the setting itself.

The original designs which were done by the illustrious sculptor and set designer Aspasia Papadoperaki for the opera will be on show at the premises of Stegi VITSENTZOS KORNAROS (97, V. Kornarou St., Sitia), from 24 until 31 July 2024, daily 19:00-21:30.

The opening will take place on Monday 29 July, at 8 pm. Ms Papadoperaki and the architect Odysseas Sgouros will talk about her work, while the stage director Nassos Zagotis will discuss matters of scenography, the particularities of set design for Erotokritos and the communication between the director and the set designer that took place when the designs were in the making.

Ellie Papadoperaki will sing excerpts from Erotokritos.
