In the link below you can watch the presentation event of Akitsushima, a novel written by Ioannis Palamas (24 letters Editions), which took place at the Sitia Polykentron on March 22, under the auspices of Stegi Vitsentzos Kornaros.
Katerina Goulielmou and Antonis Anipsitakis (co-administrators of Stegi Vitsentzos Kornaros) hosted the event, with the participation of Yorgos Drakonakis (philologist), Nikos Vassilakis (actor), and Cynthia Scholl (musician).
To begin with, Akitsushima is a love story, between a Cretan man (Achilleas) and a Japanese woman (Chiyoko). The story begins in Crete and is continued in the Land of the Rising Sun, spanning over a long period, from the 70s to the year 2030. Coincidences and accidents play an important role in the plot. The pair meet in Crete by chance where an immature adolescent love (which had begun earlier, through correspondence) is rekindled and the much-tried love affair is fulfilled after a tragic accident where the two heroes are both engaged. However, the honeymoon period is ingloriously terminated by yet another accident… From that point on, the plot plunges into the seducing atmosphere of fantasy. The boundaries between reality and myth disappear, as does the personage of Achilleas, little by little – who in the meantime has been transformed, due to his Zen Buddhism pursuit, and is now called Akiresu. The main themes that are displayed throughout the story, apart from the tempestuous love, is self-knowledge, friendship, the quest for a home land, until the belated realization of the futility of everything is upon them.
