2nd lecture: “Aspects of lingual sexism”, by Stavroula Tsiplakou, Associate Professor of Linguistics, Open University of Cyprus.

Details:

Stegi Vitsentzos Kornaros invites you to watch the second lecture of the On-line Linguistics Lecture Series, titled: “Aspects of lingual sexism”, by Stavroula Tsiplakou, on Wednesday November 23, at 8 pm.

A point of view has been expressed that language is simply a tool of thought and therefore not responsible for masculine rule and sexism in itself, yet it merely mirrors them. Of course, language may not be responsible for existing inequalities, exclusion and racism, however, by mirroring gender discrimination and sexism it contributes to their perpetuation.
Feminist linguistics have pointed out the exclusion of women from language, genderwise, and have scrutinised the use of certain vocabulary and grammatical structures that are sexist and downgrading for female individuals. More recently, significantly more complex concerns have been expressed, hoping for a better understanding of the matter of gender and its connection to language, as well as the ways in which genders clash with parameters such as social class, ethnic group, status, sexuality, and how these relations ought to be examined by feminist linguistics without triggering stereotypes and exclusions.
During the talk the theoretical issues mentioned above will be discussed, as well as matters of sexist language use in Greek, due to the existence of grammatical genders; masculine enjoys a generic use, excluding the female gender from centre stage and linguistic representation.
Dr Tsiplakou will also discuss the reasons behind the lack of resistance when it comes to job-related female nouns that have a class overtone, whereas in high status jobs the feminine gender form is not accepted.
Finally, the ideological as well as other reactions against the use of @ or of the neutral to connote gender neutrality will be discussed, as non-gender-based, non-sexist choices.
