Stegi Vitsentzos Kornaros invites you to Yorgis Markakis’ book presentation, on Friday 2/12/2022, at 20:00, in Itanos Hotel (4 Karamanli St., Sitia).
One year after the passing of the sincerely missed ophthalmologist and folk culture devotee Yorgis Markakis (1929-2021), Lychnostatis Museum (of which he was the founder) and Stegi Vitsentzos Kornaros, honour his memory by co-publishing and presenting a new book of his work (whose title translates as: “I begin at Alpha – Brokas’ Reminiscences”). The book includes two short stories from the unpublished works of the literature and folklore archive of the deceased.
The main character in these stories is Yannis Reizakis – Brokas (1880-1973), a well-known, talented rhymer from the village of Tourloti, Sitia. In the first story, the writer, on the occasion of meeting with the daughters of the folk poet, comments on the testament of Brokas, which was written in rhyme; this he characterises as a piece of folk wisdom that conveys the social context of the time on the matters of bequest and dowry, in a simple manner and an idiomatic language. In the second, longest story, Yorgis Markakis recites the rhymed love confession of Brokas to his beloved which took place in her absence yet publicly, in the kafenion of the village, thus holding the place of a serenade, as well as of an imaginative oral romance.
The book will be presented by Yannis Markakis, Director of Lychnostatis Museum, son of the author and continuer of his work, and the administrators of Stegi Vitsentzos Kornaros Andonis Anipsitakis and Katerina Goulielmou. Michalis I. Papadakis from the village of Tourloti, who has contributed to the edition with photographs of the folk poet, from his remarkable collection, will also participate in the presentation.
The book presentation will be followed by a viewing of the short film “Butterflies in the sky: the Cretan Verse (Mandiniades)”, directed by Yannis Markakis, a production of Lychnostatis Museum. A commentary will also be read, by the author and philosopher Yannis Kiourtsakis, a friend of Yorgis Markakis.
