During this, fourth, talk offered by Stegi VITSENTZOS KORNAROS on Biodiversity, Dr Spyros Sfenthourakis, Professor of Ecology and Biodiversity (University of Cyprus, Department of Biological Sciences) is going to examine some of the most common misunderstandings that can be observed amongst wider audiences and sometimes even amongst specialists, regarding the prevalent theories of the Evolutionary Biology of today.
Is Darwinism merely “a theory”? Is Darwin considered outdated? Do we actually descend from apes? And if so, why are apes still existent? Do we continue to evolve? Is this evolutionary process happening to benefit our species? Does Natural Selection favour the fittest? Does the prevalence of Natural Selection imply that antagonism is the main process that can be observed in nature? Does evolution second social inequities, eugenics, capitalism? Is it possible that all wonders witnessed on Earth have happened due to a random process? Can evolution explain the appearance of life? Can we scientifically prove everything that Evolutionary Biology proposes? And then, why are there scientists who disagree? Is Darwinism compatible with religion?
The lecturer will attempt to give concise yet crystal-clear answers to all these questions and any more that may arise during the talk.
One may watch the lecture on Facebook (Stegi Vitsentzos Kornaros) or participate through Zoom.
