“My art project ‘A Dionysian Liturgy’, which I have dedicated to the 100 years anniversary of the birth of Mikis Theodorakis, a world-renowned Greek composer and a favourite of mine, coincides with the publishing of the 2025 Stegi VITSENTZOS KORNAROS calendar, that was also dedicated to him for the same reason. As for my exhibition, it was to be first presented in Thessaloniki, then move on to Paris and conclude in Athens; however, I couldn’t help thinking – and associating: Mikis is one of the greatest Cretans of all time, as are the poet Manolis Anagnostakis, the author Nikos Kazantzakis, and Vitsentzos Kornaros, of course. Then again, Kornaros’s birthplace is no other than Sitia, a town very dear, almost sacred, to me. So, given the opportunity of Stegi VITSENTZOS KORNAROS’s tribute to Mikis Theodorakis, I had to begin the journey of my exhibition in Sitia, and at ‘Stegi’ at that. In my work, Mikis’s songs are seen as sort of holy icons that pay respect to the poets whose works he set to music. Like reminiscing feelings felt in the past which come alive once more, and are useful to future Aesthetics. His music and the poems of the great poets that he set to music are now more necessary than ever. Mikis Theodorakis’s journey is a Dionysian liturgy that praises the passions and the hopes of Hellenism, transmitting global messages, with humanity always centre stage. This exhibition is like an optimistic song, hoping for a bright future for our small yet beautiful homeland”.
