Ioanna Korfiati, 2nd Online Lecture: “Land Grabbing and Unequal Geographical Development in Sitia”.

In her second lecture, Ioanna Korfiati, Lecturer of Human Geography (Department of Geography and Planning, Cardiff University) will focus on Sitia as a case study of land grabbing for two very different (and often conflicting) land uses (energy and tourist real estate). Three key points will be addressed:

1. The placement of land grabbing within a historical trajectory of unequal geographical development in the area.
2. The crucial role of the State (and its functioning at multiple spatial scales) in the mechanisms of land grabbing.
3. The positioning of land grabbing within an open field of struggle for spatial-social justice—a field where anything is possible and where there is hope.
