In her second lecture, Ioanna Korfiati, Lecturer of Human Geography (Department of Geography and Planning, Cardiff University) will focus on Sitia as a case study of land grabbing for two very different (and often conflicting) land uses (energy and tourist real estate). Three key points will be addressed:
- The placement of land grabbing within a historical trajectory of unequal geographical development in the area.
- The crucial role of the State (and its functioning at multiple spatial scales) in the mechanisms of land grabbing.
- The positioning of land grabbing within an open field of struggle for spatial-social justice—a field where anything is possible and where there is hope.
