The 5th Stegi VITSENTZOS KORNAROS’ on-line lecture on Biodiversity by Spyros Sfendourakis, Professor of Ecology and Biodiversity (Department of Biology, University of Cyprus), with the title: “Giving up half of the Earth for other species”, will take place on Wednesday, May 19, 2024, at 8pm.
Two centuries ago, the great -now deceased- biologist Edward Osborne Wilson proposed the idea of “Half-Earth”, which basically meant giving up half of our planet for the sake of the rest of living organisms, thus maintaining the other half for ourselves, to use and exploit. How realistic can this be? What’s currently the deal with biodiversity preservation? Why is it important to protect biodiversity? In this talk, we will discuss the role played by only one species –ours- to the survival and determining the living conditions of all other species on Earth. In addition to that, the man-oriented perception of Nature, the inequalities present, our ecological footprint and the critical decisions that mankind has to immediately make will also be commented upon.
You can watch the talk live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stegivitsentzoskornaros/ or participate on Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/88922424118.
Within a couple of working days, it will be available on You Tube, on the Stegi Vitsentzos Kornaros channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClrAK7Y6H_QPscSDh2g-VXA.
