1st Pancretan Student Literature Contest “Vitsentzos Kornaros” Award Ceremony

Stegi Vitsentzos Kornaros welcomed in its premises the award-winning students of the Literature Contest organized for the first time, during the school year 2021-2022. The students were inspired by Erotokritos and the subject of Love to create original works of literature, thus proving the timelessness, the influence and the radiance of Vitsentzos Kornaros’ famous work.

With this Literature Contest, the Organising Committee wished to familiarize students of today with the work of Vitsentzos Kornaros, to show the timelessness of the ideas portrayed in Erotokritos and to encourage the creation of original works of literature.

The Contest was addressed to school students aged 13-16. Based on the subject of Love, students were invited to create an original work of literature, in poetry or prose. In spite of the difficulties due to the pandemic, more than 80 submissions came in, from 21 schools from all over Crete, in both categories.

With this Contest, Stegi Vitsentzos Kornaros wished to essentially interact with young individuals, engaging in a creative dialogue with them, not just in a typical, impersonal procedure. On June 19, the awarded participants had the opportunity to come together at the premises of Stegi, meet up with members of the two judging committees and discuss literature, share thoughts, opinions and concerns. Furthermore, the first prize winners of both categories were given a set of books, as a gift from Stegi Vitsentzos Kornaros for their school libraries, while the works of the students were read by members of the Friends of Music Association of Sitia.

The two judging committees, one per category, consisted of two literature writers and one middle-school Philologist. In the category of prose, the two writers were Niki Troullinou and Irini Dermitzaki, while in that of poetry, Antonis Perantonakis and Yannis Petrakis. The Philologists Sophia Fousteri (prose) and Ellie Poulakaki (poetry) completed the two committees.
